TileCache

TileCache is the best known open source tile service implementation. Tile Servers are a solution for high-volume where a map is broken up into pre-rendered tiles which are stitched together by client software into a seamless map; or draped over the surface of a globe.

The definition of Web Map Server – Caching (WMS-C) occurred at FOSS4G conference in 2006 as a collaboration between open source projects. TileCache was the first and definitive implementation.

MetaCarta Labs

Recently the Open GeoSpatial Consortium has started drawing up an official Web Map Tile Server (WMSTS) specification in conjunction with our development team in Adelaide. This work was sponsored by National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Microsoft and Google in order to enable vendor neutral tile farms; and standard ways of exploring time using tile sets. Our team’s implementation report is available below. We expect our contributions to TileCache to form the heat of the reference WMSTS implementation.
